The sport made its debut as a medal event at the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games. It then reappeared at the 2014 Incheon Asian Games, but the matches in that edition did not have the status of international events. It was not until its return at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games that all the cricket matches were recognized as international events by the International Cricket Council, the sport's governing body.

The inclusion of cricket in the Asian Games has seen a fluctuating history. Despite its popularity in countries like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan, various factors have led to its inconsistent presence in the Asian Games. However, with the recognition it received in the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games, there is hope that cricket will have a more stable and prominent position in future Asian Games, further promoting the development and spread of this sport in Asia.
